Delhi Woman’s Scary Auto Ride: “Almost Kidnapped”, Warns Others

Picture1

{A woman in Delhi had a very scary morning when her ride in an auto-rickshaw took a frightening turn. Her account went viral on Reddit, raising alarms about the risks of using autos and app-based rides.

What Happened

The woman, who uses apps to book autos for work, chose Ola after her usual app had no autos available. Shortly into the trip, the driver halted, saying his phone navigation had stopped working. She discovered later that he ended the ride in-app, disabling any tracking.

Moments later, he took a route that didn’t match her usual way, causing instant concern. She noticed they were traveling in the opposite direction toward a location almost two hours away, instead of her usual short route.

When she told him to turn around, he kept repeating that Google Maps showed this route and drove fast on busy roads, leaving her trapped.

Luckily, her partner was alert when she texted him, immediately calling her and demanding the driver return. Only after her partner’s angry intervention, and her thinking of jumping out, did the driver bring her back close to home, take no fare, and drive away. They felt certain he intended to abduct her, as he left without taking any money.

She felt shaken and frustrated, discovering Ola had no effective safety tools, only directing her to “call the police” with no formal complaint options.

This wasn’t an isolated case—recent police reports in Delhi and nearby areas have highlighted similar incidents with auto drivers, including alleged kidnapping attempts. For example, a teen girl in Thane recently escaped by using a compass and leaping from a moving auto.

How People Responded Online

Her Reddit account received dozens of shocked responses, with people commenting things like, “Horrifying!” and “That’s terrifying”. Several advised her to file a police complaint and escalate the matter to Ola through social channels.

Many chipped in with personal experiences and suggestions:

• Keep your house keys handy as an emergency defense.
• Announce your path over a call or have maps playing aloud to alert the driver someone is aware.
• Opt for the metro when traveling solo whenever possible.
• Stay away from Ola due to its lack of proper safety tools.

Key Travel Safety Advice from Her Experience

Reconsider Booking Solo Rides: Booking alone can be risky as you can’t always know the driver.
Match The Auto Number: Only get in if the plate matches the app listing.
Only Board After OTP Verification: Board once your one-time code is entered and the trip is live.
Monitor the Ride on Your Phone: Stay on the app to ensure the ride remains active.
Send Live Location to Someone: Always share your live route with someone you trust.
Sit Safely: Sit on the open side to escape quickly if required.
Stick to Areas You Recognize: Stick to roads you’re familiar with to avoid risk.
Track the Route Yourself: Follow along on maps to spot detours.
Look for Police: Be conscious of where help is nearby.
Steer Clear of Ola: She strongly advised avoiding Ola due to poor safety and weak complaint systems.

This alarming incident underscores the urgent need for ride-hailing platforms to implement stricter Dolly chaiwala driver checks, real-time monitoring, and proper passenger support systems during emergencies.
